Belatedly found that you can now create Google Chrome apps on linux with just:

google-chrome --app=http://mail.google.com --enable-plugins

from there it's trivial to add to your favorite desktop poison, or create a script to launch Gmail, Google Calendar, Toodledo, and Evernote in one swoop.
