Freemind is pretty good, but I want to take nexus much further. In my current (unreleased) developer version I have complete freedom in how I place each branch and can freely mix text, images and annotations. The whole thing can be driven entirely with a pen, for instance with a tabletPC or electronic whiteboard, without requiring windows ink APIs. There is a lot of stuff to add yet but I'm quite excited by where it's going.
